Crafting Your Guiding Light: A Guide to Creating a Mission Statement as an EMDR Consultant
Dec 14, 2023Introduction:
As we work as EMDR consultants on helping others, nobody teaches us how to run a business. My goal is to provide a strong foundation and skill set for EMDR clinicians to assist them in taking small steps to strengthen their practice. One crucial aspect that can illuminate your path, and guide your professional endeavors, is the creation of a mission statement. A mission statement serves as a compass, providing direction and purpose. In this blog, we'll explore the significance of a mission statement for EMDR consultants and guide you through the process of crafting your own.
Understanding the Importance of a Mission Statement
A mission statement is a concise declaration that encapsulates the core values, purpose, and goals of an individual or organization. For EMDR consultants, a well-crafted mission statement serves several essential functions:
- Clarity of Purpose: Clearly defining your mission helps you understand the fundamental reason for your work as an EMDR consultant. It acts as a guiding light during challenging times and aids in maintaining focus on your objectives.
- Start with WHY: In this video, Simon Sinek beautifully outlines the importance of Starting with WHY. If we started dinner conversations not with “Where do you work?” but with “Why do you do the work you do?”, we could build more meaningful conversations and connections. This is how we develop internal leadership in the EMDR career path and help others along the way. Listen to Simon discuss Martin Luther King’s mission and use this to inspire you.
Establishing Professional Identity: A mission statement communicates your professional identity and values to both clients and colleagues. It distinguishes you within the field and helps build trust with those seeking your expertise. This also will help you find your niche. Look back at the trainings you’ve completed, and this may be a good starting point.
Inspiring Commitment: Your mission statement can be a source of inspiration for yourself and others. It fosters a sense of commitment and dedication to the principles and goals you hold dear.
Steps to Create Your EMDR Consultant Mission Statement
- Reflect on Your Values:
- Consider the values that are fundamental to your practice as an EMDR consultant. These may include empathy, compassion, integrity, and a commitment to continuous learning.
- Define Your Purpose:
- Clarify the overarching purpose of your work. Ask yourself why you chose to become an EMDR consultant and what impact you aim to make in the lives of your clients and the field.
- Identify Your Goals:
- Outline specific, measurable goals that align with your purpose. These goals could involve expanding your expertise, contributing to research, or enhancing the accessibility of EMDR therapy.
- Craft a Concise Statement:
- Keep your mission statement concise and focused. Aim for clarity and simplicity, ensuring that it resonates with both professionals in the field and potential clients.
- Seek Feedback:
- Share your mission statement with colleagues, mentors, or trusted individuals in the EMDR community. Gather feedback to refine and strengthen your statement.
- Revise and Finalize:
- Based on the feedback received, make any necessary revisions to your mission statement. Ensure that it accurately reflects your values, purpose, and goals. Once satisfied, consider it finalized.
Example Mission Statement for an EMDR Consultant:
"To create global change and reduce suffering by training therapists to provide high-quality EMDR services and teaching them how to lead others to replicate their vision.”
There it is. I just wrote that. Just now. You can do the same. Please have a goal. If you don’t have a goal, then you can divert to all sorts of paths. This is crucial in developing your why, as we soldier on to create quality services and help the world, one client a time. Namaste, friends. You’ve got this.
Conclusion:
Crafting a mission statement as an EMDR consultant is a reflective and intentional process that lays the foundation for a purposeful and fulfilling professional journey. As you navigate the complexities of trauma therapy, let your mission statement be a constant reminder of the principles that guide your practice and the positive impact you aim to achieve.
